Seriti Institute (NPC) welcomes the European Union’s commitment to South Africa’s Just Energy Transition (JET) through the newly announced €4.7 billion Global Gateway Investment package. This investment is a significant step towards accelerating South Africa’s transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy while fostering inclusive economic growth.
As an organisation dedicated to policy advocacy, community engagement, and fostering partnerships in the energy transition, Seriti aligns with the core objectives of this partnership. Seriti Institute recognises the importance of ensuring that South Africa’s transition to renewable energy sources does not leave workers or communities behind. Through our ongoing initiatives, we are committed to supporting the country’s clean energy future while promoting job creation, skills development, and economic empowerment.
Seriti primarily supports the energy transition through policy work, community engagement, and strategic partnerships, rather than direct energy infrastructure developments. However, Seriti Institute is actively exploring opportunities to engage in community energy projects to drive localised renewable energy solutions. Our focus is on facilitating knowledge sharing, advocating sustainable energy policies, and ensuring that local community benefits from the shift to renewable energy.
One such initiative is the Social Employment Fund (SEF) project in the Komati area, which Seriti Institute is implementing on behalf of the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). This initiative serves as a practical example of Seriti Institute’s role in ensuring that energy transition efforts translate into tangible benefits for communities. Since its launch in early 2025, the project has offered opportunities to about 100 participants, who have been trained in crop production.
By integrating this initiative with the EU-South Africa energy investment pact, Seriti Institute is committed to scaling up efforts to drive economic growth and resilience. Through community collaboration, skills development, and inclusive job creation, this project will not only support workers transitioning from traditional energy sectors but also pave the way for future employment in renewable energy and sustainable development.
Through collaborations with industry stakeholders, government institutions, and training providers, Seriti Institute further aims to equip workers transitioning from traditional energy sectors with the necessary skills for careers in renewable energy.
In alignment with national energy frameworks, including the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) and the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), Seriti Institute plays a role in fostering dialogue and enabling partnerships that drive a sustainable and just energy transition. By working closely with both public and private stakeholders, we ensure that the energy transition not only reduces carbon emissions but also creates long-term economic opportunities for affected communities.
Akash Appama, Sustainable Development and Grants Officer, shared:
“We are optimistic and excited about the opportunities this investment brings. Through innovation, collaboration, and community engagement, Seriti Institute is committed to building an energy future that is not only sustainable but also economically and socially transformative”
Seriti Institute looks forward to the positive contributions this investment will bring to communities across South Africa, ensuring that the transition to clean energy creates meaningful opportunities, fosters resilience, and improves the quality of life for all.
