Inspiring South Africa’s Next Generation of STEM Leaders
The STEM: Awareness and Engagement Programme is a nationwide initiative funded by UNICEF and implemented by the Seriti Institute, aimed at empowering high school learners from under-resourced communities in South Africa with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
This programme introduces learners to high-impact STEM careers and industries, offering structured engagement, mentorship, and practical exposure that broadens their career horizons and builds pathways to higher education, skills development, and the future workforce.
The programme supports Grade 9 to 11 learners, equipping them with critical career guidance during a pivotal stage of subject and career decision-making. By connecting them with university students and STEM professionals, the programme fosters mentorship, real-world inspiration, and confidence-building.
Key Goals
Programme Structure and Phases
Learners begin their journey by accessing an interactive online learning platform designed to introduce them to real-world opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Through a combination of digital content and guided mentorship, learners explore a wide range of STEM careers and post-school education and training (PSET) pathways.
Mentors share their personal experiences, helping learners connect their own interests to realistic and inspiring career paths. These authentic interactions motivate learners and make STEM futures feel achievable and relatable. By the end of the programme, each learner creates a personalised STEM career roadmap, with clearer goals and a practical plan for success.

Through the STEM Programme’s job shadowing opportunity, I saw firsthand what a future in science and technology could look like. It opened my eyes and made me believe that, no matter where you come from, everything is possible. I’m truly grateful for the experience.”
