For decades, Komati Power Station served as the beating heart of economic activity in this community, a source of work, dignity, and stability for hundreds of families.
When the power station was decommissioned, the shutdown did not just turn off the lights, it turned off the income stream that many depended on. Job losses followed, and uncertainty about the future grew. The Social Employment Fund (SEF) programme was introduced as a bold response to this transition to ensure that no community is left behind in South Africa’s shift toward cleaner energy.
