The National Youth Service (NYS) programme continues to make a profound impact in communities across South Africa, with Orange Farm standing as a shining example of its success. Implemented by Seriti Institute, the programme has provided thousands of young people with opportunities to gain skills, earn a living, and change the trajectory of their lives.

Since October 2024, Seriti has been implementing the third phase of the NYS programme, creating more job opportunities across the country. A total of 2,094 youth has benefited from the initiative, acquiring valuable skills and hands-on experience that have empowered them to pursue diverse career paths and entrepreneurial ventures.

The impact of the NYS programme is best told through the inspiring journeys of its participants. Selina Motaung and Phiwe Zwane are just two of many who have taken big steps forward with the programme.

Selina Motaung worked in Early Childhood Development (ECD) and is now a permanent teacher for 0–4-year-olds at Itsoseng Day Care. She plans to use her salary to get an accredited ECD qualification and hopes to open a mother care centre in a few years.

“Before joining the NYS program, I was unemployed and struggling to find work. A friend invited me to a Seriti Institute workshop, where I got a certificate for attending an Early Childhood Development session. A few months later, someone shared a link to apply for the NYS program, and I was lucky to be accepted. I was placed in the ECD sector, and during my work, the principal of Itsoseng saw how well I connected with the children and offered me a job as a teacher. This program changed my life, and now I want to get an accredited ECD certificate and hopefully open a mother care centre in about three years.”

Phiwe Zwane used her experience as an ECD team leader to start a Saturday school at her home, helping children in her community with reading, writing, and homework. The stipend she received helped her buy stationery for the children and save for her own family.

“After the NYS program, I was able to start a Saturday school at home. I teach children how to read, write, and help them with their homework. With the stipend I received, I was able to buy stationery for the kids and save some money for my two children.”

The National Youth Service programme is more than just an employment initiative, it’s a catalyst for change. By equipping young South Africans with essential skills and opportunities, NYS is helping to build stronger, more prosperous communities and creating brighter futures.

Through initiatives of this caliber, Seriti Institute continues to position itself as a leading organisation committed to building resilient communities and empowering futures, with a mission to assist vulnerable individuals in achieving self-sufficiency and creating meaningful lives for themselves and their families.

With continued support, the programme will remain a cornerstone of youth development, empowering individuals to turn their aspirations into reality and contribute meaningfully to society.
