Starting with what she had. There were times when Makhosi had to buy mealie meal on credit from her employer. Some of her grandchildren also could not access child support grants because they did not have birth certificates. Growing food became another way to help keep her household going. Despite limited space and water, she started a small garden with spinach and cabbages.
At 58, Makhosi Nkosi supports a household of eight on Green Branch Farm in uMshwathi Local Municipality. With an income that often falls short of her family’s needs and the rising cost of food, putting enough on the table has not always been easy.
